Restoration of largely derelict 1560 Grade A listed Scottish property

Exterior shot.

This almost derelict 17-bedroom, one-bathroom property has been restored and converted to an 8-bedroom, 7 bathroom family home.

Both the ground floor and third floor were completely derelict when the owner bought the East Lothian building, which had no heating or other modern facilities. Two years later, the builders have created a family home that retains painstakingly restored original features, but also has wiring, heating, bathrooms with power showers and a lift.

What the customer said:

The client wanted 'a modern family home, not a living museum piece.' He said the builder had transformed the property into a beautiful family home while still respecting its history.

What the Master Builder of the Year judges said:

"This exceptional project was a labour of love for the contractor. The craftsmanship was of the highest quality in restoring 16th century window frames, shutters and doors. Stonemasonry skills were of the highest order to bring back to life a derelict stone staircase.

They added "The builder managed to fuse modern building techniques with traditional craft skills, returning a derelict building to a stunning family home."
