Love match as builder serves up dream home!

The vaulted roof, looking towards the fireplace.

It was a case of aces all the way as this magnificent home emerged from the site of a disused tennis court. A challenging and novel project, this specially designed house built of green English oak used the timber from 83 trees, and oak is a particularly difficult material to work. Nonetheless, Lutterworth-based Michael John Building, worked closely with the architect and his client to create a masterpiece of craftsmanship that brings the design to life.

The exterior of the timber-frame construction was clad with bricks, but the oak is revealed inside the building. The centrepiece of this ambitious project is the main living area - a superb open space with a high vaulted ceiling reminiscent of a period chapel house - an unusual feature in such a contemporary building. The use of natural light is maximised, with whole walls of windows dominating the construction.
