Seasonal Checklist
SPRING
- Check, mend fences and treat with wood preservative
- Check outbuildings for winter damage
- Check exterior timber for signs of decay
- Clean algae from paths and patios, repoint joints, seal
- Check exterior paintwork and make a painting plan of action
- Consider getting external timber work replaced with low maintenance PVC-U
- Restore and clean garden furniture
SUMMER
- Remove old and blistered paint from timber door and window frames
- Repaint window frames and woodwork - avoid painting in hot sun! (The paint may blister)
- Replace crumbling pointing
- Replace damaged guttering and rusted cast-iron guttering with a modern alternative
AUTUMN
- Complete exterior painting before damp weather sets in
- Check exterior lighting is working before daylight fades
- Check gutters and downpipes for blockages
- Clear out the shed - clean, treat and put away furniture
- Make sure missing or damaged tiles and slates have been replaced
WINTER
- Check drains and gulley and add a drain tidy
- Replace damaged locks on sheds and outhouses
- Check draught proofing around letterbox, doors, windows
- Make sure you have a supply of rock salt for sprinkling on slippery paths
DID YOU KNOW?
- You need planning permission to build a wall over 1m high on the boundary of a public highway or footpath
- Excessive trespass deterrents, such as broken glass along a wall, could lead to criminal prosecution if injuries are sustained by passers by
- Overhanging branches from next door can be cut down up to the boundary, but are still the neighbour's property.
- You have access to a neighbour's property to carry out certain works, such as clearing your drains
